Build a Hot Wire CNC Foam Cutter with inexpensive 3d printer electronics.

The C-Beam Evolution is an evolving machine. The MkII is inspired by Kyo's C-Beam Spinx but currently uses my own design of plates made of 8mm acrylic (X-axis ends) and 6mm polycarbonate (Y axis ends). Ox Stainless with ballscrews for motion, nema 23 steppers, LInuxcnc for control software. Using basic parts for frame from Makersupplies, and the rest sourced from ebay. Building a small router hoping it will be able to cut aluminum with decent results.

Using most of the parts of the MiniMill, and adding a few other parts (cost < $200), transforms the MiniMill into a very capable machine. Final build area as shown is 10.25" x 16". With a custom Y-plate, I will take it to 10.25" x 20-24".

I wanted to create a desktop unit that kept a minimal profile and neatly contained the PS, Controller, and all wiring, making it a singular unit that could be easily transportable (as it will be doing double duty at my home and at work)

An OX CNC router using Blue OX Solutions gantry plates, a Bosch Colt router, and most of the remaining parts coming from Openbuilds parts store. Table has about 22"x55" cutting capacity and I am planning on a combination T-Slot and vacuum hold down system.

Building the OB Lead 1515 was straight forward. The on-line OpenBuilds assembly videos were extremely clear and easy to follow. Initial build of this machine is with OpenBuilds BlackBox which simplified getting the electronics to work the first time. OpenBuilds staff are friendly and helpful.

A quick and easy way to make a 3-way mitered corner using Corner Connectors

Getting an accurate scan of a golf ball can be difficult with general-purpose 3D scanners. This purpose-built golf ball scanner uses a very accurate Keyence LK-081 laser displacement sensor with an Open Builds linear actuator for the vertical axis and a Sherline CNC rotary table for the turntable. Scan detail is determined by the sample step size and can be set arbitrarily based on desired scan time.

This is my build for an ACRO system with a custom z-axis for changing z height for focusing or for adjusting depth when making multiple passes when cutting.

In short...this was a fun project.

This is the original C-Beam Sphinx with the 16 wheel X gantry plates. I'm using the Ethernet Smoothstepper, Gecko G540 stepper driver and Mach 4 for motion control.

This is based on core XY kinematics. First of all, we designed a CAD model. Most of the required parts are designed by us in solidworks software, and some parts are downloaded from a web platform ‘grabcad’. After that we assembled those parts and inspected them in solidworks. The designed CAD models are frame of 470mmX392mmX545mm SBR linear guide rod, linear guide holder, lead screw, motor mounts, pulley, bed mount, idler block, timing belt clamper.

Created a small Z axis for the ACRO motion system. I wanted to more easily adjust the height of the laser to accommodate various thicknesses of material, without having to manually loosen screws to adjust. Also wanted to be able to vary the height for multiple cutting passes on some materials. Try to stick to a similar aesthetic as the original ACRO system and plates.

This is a cnc router with 3 axis and a kress 1050 motor. Its 140x120cm and a homebuild with your help!

My goals for this build were to eliminate slop and flex while also allowing easy serviceability.

Not much to say... Soundproofing box for noisy works... Build in MDF and 20 mm plexiglas. Very effective!!!

just wanted to share my build of a huge 3d printer. It stands just over 2 meters tall and has a total print area of around 850mm x 850mm.

The idea is to make a simple effective ventilator, studying the concept of using a simple push process with and actuator.

This is a modification I made to my Voxel Ox 3D Printer Z axis, which synchronizes the Z leadscrews via a shaft and helical gear transmission. It prevents the two Z leadscrew from getting out of adjustment relative to each other, and uses a single Z motor instead of two. This build is just documenting the specific changes I have made to the Z-axis, since the frame and other axes are still from the original Voxel Ox design.

First time CNC user having a good time with a MiniMill

A Miter Saw station built using a Dewalt Miter Saw Stand and V-Slot extrusions.

We created an A1 ACRO Drawing robot specifically for the artist communities. It utilizes the popular ISO 'A series' paper sizes standards

I put this together to cut aluminum. Chips get everywhere! Cover your lead screws. Put the mill inside an enclosure. DON'T mount electronics (especially the power supply) inside the enclosure, chips will get into it and short it out. Remove the manual jog wheels, they contribute to chatter (something about having a mass on the end of the lead screw causes vibration). I cut at 14000 RPM, 0.05 inch width of cut, 0.05 inch depth of cut, 30 inches per minute and just barely avoid chatter.

I built this as it is a small portable design.

I wanted to try a different way of operating the Z Axis so I setup a tower using 40x40. In the end it worked excellently and can easily print 60mm/s with 150mm/s travels. The coreXY is a very cool kinematic, and you can get some pretty great speed and accuracy. The main issue is the fact your Steps/mm are doubled, so the lower end motors don't like it at high speeds.

This started as an attempt to learn to weld and quickly took on a life of its own.

In order to make some nice traveling video you need a slider .

This build is to show what's possible as well with openBuilds! I use a single ArduinoMega and 5 separate stepper drivers (A4988). The LEDs are all NeoPixels. Collision 'detection' is all done within the code, so the endstops are only sensors I use in this build. I'm a self-employed video-artist and this is my first installation which just needs power and it runs (where I'm quite proud of). Normally my interactive installations take a long setup time, so this installation is a relief :)
