The plasma CNC that I have built has a water table that measures 1350mm x 650mm. The water is flooded onto the cut area while cutting and recycled around with a pump. This is to reduce smoke, cool the metal being cut to reduce distortion and also to keep sparks to a minimum. This is my first CNC router build, so I started with the OpenBuilds C-Beam Machine XLarge mechanical bundle, including four high torque stepper motors. I took my time with the mechanical build, sought and found some great help for my control system, and designed and built a custom cabinet to house everything.

Simple enclosure for the OB Minimill

Small Mill type CNC machine, using C-Beams and V-Slot rail, bundle packs as a starter point. I needed a smallish desktop machine to fit a pretty narrow use case for my business, but the machine itself has larger applications to the OB community. Currently I will run the Dewalt 611 router on the Z axis, but have plans to add in a brushless RC style motor. So this design does have room to go either way easily.

The Rock n Roll is built on granite, is solid as a rock, and gathers no moss. This build provides a high degree of accuracy and repeatability. Built to be strong, use redundancy, and use long lever arms to average out imperfections in the equipment. Built to go fast and light. We will use a high speed spindle, large high voltage stepper motors and small cutting heads to overwhelm the forces produced at the cutting head.

The machine has met and exceeded my expectations on repeatability and accuracy. Cost was approx £600 including the Windows tablet.

Ultimately - the design is based on the highly successful Ultimaker concept, for which a regular size costs in the thousands, and one of this size would be edging into the 10's of thousands. Expected Build cost - <$800 It is a X/Y Cartesian printer with Raising/Lowering Z axis (Hotbed.) - Overall size is 610mm x 610mm x 750mm - with build volume of around 450mmx450mmx450mm - and will also have the ability to change work tools - such as for CNC Routing, Lazer etching, 3d Scanning, etc.

The Acro Laser Machine Build

I built a motion control camera slider with the V-Slot® NEMA 17 Linear Actuator Bundle (Belt Driven)

Replaced the original Z-axis for a shapeoko with a c-beam upgrade. This upgrade required a nema 17 mount and a quiet spindle mount I printed with a 3D printer.
